Contact Lines

Artist’s Wall: Contact Lines | Doron Oved

Curator: Karni Barzilay

For Doron Oved, landscape and nature, the earth beneath our feet, are a poetic realm of discovery, lingering, and observation. Wandering through this space, she shifts between two poles: a deep sense of belonging to the place and a subtle distancing that allows her to take a fresh look at her immediate surroundings through the camera lens.

In Contact Lines, the artist combines photographs from different projects from recent years in a new syntax that traces a web of associations between nature and culture and between humans and their environment. On the wall facing the entrance to the Museum stretches a wallpaper of a cactus she photographed on Kibbutz Ramot Menashe, looming like a proud monument. Next to it hangs a detail from Ilana Goor’s sculpture, Woman in the Wind, which looks like a close-up of a mossy tree root. On the other side of the wall, another wallpaper unfolds dense undergrowth from a wooded area in Kibbutz Hanita, where Oved grew up, which here becomes a secret and fantastic hiding place. It is paired with the documentation of objects and broken fragments she found in the area – remnants of an abandoned past.

Through the artist’s deceptive gaze, the images are imbued with the question of natural vs. artificial. The towering plant takes on a sculptural presence, while Goor’s sculpture resembles a living organism. The discarded objects are elevated to the status of archaeological, pseudo-scientific artifacts, serving as clues in a fictional story about place and time.

The juxtaposition of the photographs – large works next to small prints, almost but not actually touching – creates a lyrical and delicate arrangement, zooming-in and zooming-out on a fictional environment. Each side seems to compete for the viewer’s attention, as the gaze moves back and forth between the open natural landscape to enigmatic images that exude intimacy; traveling between the wild, the domesticated, and the staged, which are inextricably intertwined and enmeshed with one another.
